By Four Seasons Heating, Air Conditioning, Plumbing & Electric - March 10, 2015
We just entered the month of March and that means soon the snow will thaw and spring will be here. Of course, with Spring comes green grass, budding flowers, and heavy rains. If your home is not properly prepared for the precipitation, you could find yourself dealing with a serious flood. Prevent thousands of dollars worth of damage with these flood prevention tips!
Protect Your Home From Flooding!
- Gutters and Downspouts: Be sure your gutters are clear of debris by spring. Over the course of the winter, twigs, dirt, and other blockages could have formed. When the water eventually thaws and the rains come, these obstructions will cause the water to overflow out the side and pool at your foundation.
- Window Well Covers: If your basement has windows it is absolutely essential you purchase window well covers. Otherwise, you could find yourself with inches of water accumulating in these pits just waiting to seep through your windows.
- Septic Tanks and Sewers: Be sure to have your sewer line inspected! Heavy rainfall is sure to hit Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana at some point this spring and an overburdened sewer line or septic tank could flow back into your home.
- Foundation Cracks: Cracks in your foundation are the most direct path for water to enter your home. Before spring arrives, search the exterior foundation and your basement’s walls and floors. Use epoxy to fill in any cracks and masonry sealer indoors.
