Step 1: Switch to a 2-Inch Rigid PVC Pipe
Most sump pumps ship with a 1.5-inch discharge pipe. Upgrading to a 2-inch diameter rigid PVC pipe makes a measurable difference in two ways.
A 2-inch PVC pipe drains faster after each pump cycle, which means less standing water sits inside the line overnight. It also holds its shape, unlike flexible rubber hoses that sag over time, creating low spots where water pools and freezes. Replace any rubber hose extension with rigid PVC before the first freeze of the season.
Step 2: Slope the Pipe Downward at Least 1/4 Inch Per Foot
A properly sloped discharge line drains completely after every pump cycle. Water that drains fully out of the pipe cannot freeze inside it. Slope the line downward at a minimum of 1/4 inch per foot, running away from your home.
Walk the full length of the discharge pipe and look for any sections that level off or dip. Reposition or rebury those sections to eliminate standing water traps. Gravity does the work of keeping your line clear between pump cycles.
Step 3: Bury and Extend the Line Away from Your Foundation

Step 4: Insulate All Exposed Pipe Sections
Every section of pipe running above ground needs protection. Foam pipe insulation sleeves slip over the pipe and secure with zip ties. For sections facing extreme cold exposure, wrap heating cable (also called heat tape) directly on the pipe first, then slide the foam sleeve over it.
Focus insulation on:
- The pipe where it exits your home’s exterior wall
- Any above-ground run longer than 12 inches
- The final 2 to 3 feet leading to the discharge point

Step 6: Fit a Pop-Up Drain Emitter at the Pipe’s Exit
Replace the open pipe end or splash block at your discharge point with a pop-up drain emitter set into a bed of pea gravel. The emitter stays closed between pump cycles, reducing the cold air that drafts back up into the pipe.
During a pump cycle, water pressure opens the emitter, pushing water out. After the cycle ends, the emitter closes again. Drill three 1/2-inch holes in the bottom of the emitter housing before installation. These holes drain any water that collects in the emitter itself, so it doesn’t freeze shut.
Set the emitter into at least five gallons of pea gravel. The gravel gradually disperses the exiting water, reducing puddle formation and ice buildup at the end of the line.
Step 7: Check the Line Monthly Throughout Winter
Monthly checks through the winter season catch problems early. Walk the full discharge line and look for:
- Ice forming at the exit point or emitter
- Snow or debris blocking the emitter opening
- New sags or dips in above-ground sections
- Frost forming on the outside of insulated sections
